Long Term Change
It all starts with food, education, jobs, and language; these are the roots from which AHA will achieve its growth and continuity. "Continuity" is a word that all Abenakis know well. It is an age-old Abenaki tradition to walk every step in preparation for the next seven generations. Title VII Indian Education will introduce contemporary Abenaki culture and traditions to future generations, who will, in turn, ensure their continuity and significance to our community life. In addition, this enriched educational experience will create opportunities, both economic and social, for underprivileged Abenaki students and other Native Americans. AHA's cultural and historical resources, materials, and educational efforts will open new horizons for every single student, classroom, and school where they are at work. They will also contribute profoundly towards building a better understanding and appreciation of our ancestral community's rich and diverse culture. The revitalization of the Abenaki language will instill a sense of pride and identity for Abenaki families that has been allowed to languish for too long. These are not only the central features of community for the Abenaki; we believe they are necessary to strong communities everywhere. |
